Future Life - Model

After a few sketches I decided that my model should be made from the bottle tops arranged horizontally and attached by wire. I decided that instead of having a separate canapy covering the structure it will be best to alter the shape so that one isn't needed. I made a model to try and visualise what it may look like and did some quick rendering to see what the finished effect may be like...

The structure could close over when it is not being used, It would sort of roll into itself and lock up.

Future Life- bottle cap structure

For my future life project i would like to use bottle caps to form my structure but i'm not entirely sure how i want to go about it so need to do some experimentation...
Firstly, Here is the project brief that i have written for myself.

Thanks to a friend i luckily now have over 100 bottle caps to experiment with!...

Here is an initial idea of what i thought the structure could look like;

with the bottle caps stacked on top of eachother connected by wire in the centre a bit like this...

to then make something like this....

An alternative would be to arrange the bottle caps side to side like this

They can be attached together using wire and wrapped around a free standing metal structure

Or some can be arranged to create a letter or shape....

Boogazine- refined topic

So, My previous boogazine topic was too broad to continue with. It didn't focus on anything in particular. I've therefore decided to refine my subject and to look into how the interior effects us and how it can improve the success of a business for example.
 The question i would be asking would be along the lines of-

• How important is Interior Design in the success of commercial businesses?
• The role of the interior in selling
• The role of interior design in commercial success.

I will look into;

• why it is so important to make a good first impression
• why do we judge things on their looks, association and assumptions.
• reflecting the brand in the design, brand identity
• creating a look and doing it on a budget
• studies looking at the relation between design and success
• human needs, classes and target audience.
• how layout plays a part
• effects of a recession
• 'roll out' themes, common threads between chains
• commonality between successful designs

I will look at studies that prove or disprove the idea that interior design is important in the success of a retail environment, cafes, restaurants etc

I also look at examples of successful businesses where their success has come from their interior design.

I will look into the idea behind certain interiors and then the success of the business or development afterwards.

So, I was recently asked to produce a proposal form for my tutor so that he could get an idea of my chosen topic and what it is that i will write about. Looking at areas such as association and the subconscious and how the likes of colours and themes play a part in how we remember things and make assumptions on others. Looking into human needs and what it is that makes us want things or like particular things, empathy and attachment with objects.

 

5.    History/Background of the Subject

Psychology, whether we know it or not has always played a part in design. There has always been a reason for us to prefer a certain style or look. There has to be a reason why a certain colour or material is appropriate for a certain setting or place. And it is also the reason why  market researchers know exactly how to target their customers. Our memories are formed by our experiences of the designs of others. We then use these experiences to familiarise and to form our own opinions.

My tutor's reply was that even though the subject sounded interesting, it was too broad, and that i should focus on something more specific. for example, how this idea relates to a person or a building.

Initially, I have NO thoughts. I'm struggling to refine my subject. However, after flicking through a copy of Blueprint it has got me thinking.....

Future Life- Street pastors

After looking at different artwork and furniture decorated by bottle tops it got me thinking about what the bottle top represents; the issues if littering and alcoholism.
I would like to make a pop- up style installation as part of my future life project so it would be great if it was something that addressed an issue...

Street Pastors

'Street Pastors' is an inter-denominational Church response to urban problems, engaging with people on the streets to care, listen and dialogue.
They work voluntarily at night to care and listen to those who may be lonely, frightened, intoxicated, vulnerable, intimidated, hurting, merry and mischief makers. There are around 9000 trained street pastors in the UK in over 250 areas and their main aim is to care and listen without preaching. They give out water, blankets and flip flops for those with sore feet on a night out! I'm really inspired and touched by these wonderful people who give up their own time, on cold dark nights, to help those who many many people wouldn't give the time of day to.


My installation could be a place for the street pastors to be sited at, a known 'base' for them. Somewhere where people know they can go to if they are in need of help.
The installation would only be small, and the design could feature the bottle top to link back with alcoholism.

Liam Fogarty, former CEO of BBC Merseyside & runner-up in the Liverpool Mayoral campaign 2012 says...

“Most weekends my Saturday nights end right after Match of the Day. I got a different, and rather humbling perspective, when I accompanied the Liverpool City Centre Street Pastors on patrol in the city centre last night. This ecumenical group of men and women go about the streets and nightspots of Liverpool from 10.30pm to the early (or, if you prefer, really late hours). They offer a helping hand, a listening ear, and tea and sandwiches to any who might need them. They also come armed with flip-flops to allow the tottering owners of high-heeled shoes to negotiate their way home with minimum discomfort.
The Pastors don’t ‘evangelise’, at least in the sense of pressing prayers or literature upon those they help. But the volunteers I accompanied through Ropewalks, Mathew Street and Dale Street were ‘bearing witness’ through evidently good deeds.
Rough sleepers, raucous hen parties and revellers the worse for drink were all treated with kindness, patience and courtesy. The Pastors have good relations with the Police and door staff. And they gave me an insight into what the phrase ‘nightime economy’ really means. Night-time Liverpool is a fun place. People who enjoy the city centre pub and club scene have a great time and reckon its as safe and friendly as any in the UK.
From time to time I deed feel like I had walked into one of those endless programmes you find on Bravo TV and it kind of brought out my inner Oliver Cromwell. But what does one expect when my idea of a pushing the boat out on a Saturday night is staying up after MotD to watch The Football League Show…”

Future life; the 'gift'

On Friday we visited Liverpool as part of our future life project. We looked round the Liverpool Biennial to explore the idea of gleaning through artworks and occupied spaces. We were asked to bring home a 'gift'- a gathering of site phenomena that expresses your views and thoughts on waste triggered by what you have observed.

I struggled to find something to bring back as a gift and was a little unsure of what was wanted but the object i finally chose to bring back was a bottle top. I think it is something small and simple to represent the problem of littering but at the same time it can be used in a really creative way to make something artistic....

 

 

I love how these bottle tops have been used to create a pebble- style flooring!
